What is self love?

We always hear that we need to love ourselves before we can love someone else. But what does this really mean? It sounds very nice and neat, but when it comes to actually applying this mantra to our own lives, a lot of us fail to realize the true meaning and value of this statement.

Self love means knowing your worth.

It's a sort of independence that takes on a deeper level. You must learn to find happiness in yourself. When you're with other people, yes, laugh and be happy with them, but you should still be happy in a way when you're by yourself.

For example, getting a text from a crush, boyfriend, or girlfriend can send a rush of excitement through us, and this is perfectly normal. But this loved one should express similar feelings for you.

There must come a point where you do not let other people use you or walk all over you.

You need to love yourself enough to where you will not give up your wellbeing for others.

It is still important to be nice to others. Even those who may be mean or cold, we should try to be polite and kind.

But you should not go out of your way and jump through hoops and holes just to please others. Give this special attention to those who deserve it and treat you kindly. And save the rest of your love for yourself.

Self love is important because if we do not take care of ourselves, we will become damaged. Overworking to give someone attention who doesn't give it back can leave us feeling confused, hurt, lost, depressed, etc. In the long run, this can lead to serious trauma that will make it more difficult for us to enjoy life and be truly happy.

So self love essentially means loving yourself so that you do not let others abuse you.
