Knowing Your Worth

Updated: Mar 20, 2022

HEY! I hope you are having a great day ;) I am here today to talk about my personal experience with school pressure, grades, self worth… Maybe those words make sense together to you, I am sure you have already been through this and this may be useful.

I am a committed and hardworking student who loves studying and, even when it gets tough, I never give up on it. I try my best to keep myself focused on my school work- I study hard for all my exams, I plan my assignments… It sounds good right?

But what sounds really bad is this: I always expect good grades.

I noticed that every time I work hard for something, I unconsciously convince myself that I should be waiting for only success. I am a junior now, and the way things have changed (exams, overwhelming school work, tons of homework, etc.) made me realize that I was wrong thinking only about a good outcome. Not only this, but I used to define myself with that grade, which is, in reality, only a number that has nothing to do with self worth.

This is not an excuse to be lazy or to work less, but for instance, you could use that grade to see the chapters that you have to work on more, or use that grade to learn from a mistake you made in the exam and that you shouldn't make again. A bad grade can also teach you a new study method… but never define yourself by that grade.

What really defines you is your hard work, your organization, and your commitment.

This is what I am learning from my last two years in high school to prepare myself for university, and you can learn from it too, because if you don't fail, you will never know what success really means or how glory really feels. So allow yourself to take a break, think, and try to change. Being a good student gets tough from time to time, but what matters is not giving up and trying to figure out solutions for what's going on in your life.

Also, being a good student doesn't mean spending everyday studying. Extracurriculars are important, social life is important , those things even make you study more efficiently. So take it easy on yourself and remember that failure is the way to success if you don't break down, just find the balance and everything will be just fine.

I hope you find this short article useful and Happy Halloween!
